Common questions

Why is my in-hand salary so much lower than my CTC?

CTC is everything your employer spends on you in a year, not what reaches your bank account. Three things come out before you see the money: the employer's PF contribution and gratuity, which are part of CTC but go into retirement accounts rather than your salary; your own PF contribution; and professional tax plus income tax deducted at source. On a typical package the gap between CTC and annual take-home runs 15% to 25%.

What percentage of CTC is usually basic salary?

Most Indian employers set basic salary at 40% to 50% of CTC. It matters because PF, gratuity and HRA exemption are all calculated from basic. A lower basic means a bigger cash component in hand each month, but smaller retirement savings and a smaller HRA exemption if you rent.

Is the employer PF contribution part of my salary?

It is part of CTC but not part of your gross salary, and you cannot spend it today. Both you and your employer contribute 12% of basic, so the money lands in your EPF account and earns interest until you withdraw it. The calculator subtracts the employer share from CTC to reach gross, then subtracts your share from gross to reach in-hand.

Can I choose the ₹1,800 PF cap instead of 12% of basic?

The statutory wage ceiling for PF is ₹15,000 a month, which works out to ₹1,800. Some employers cap contributions there, others apply 12% of actual basic. Check your payslip, since the choice changes both your take-home and your retirement balance. The calculator supports all three cases, including no PF at all.

Does this calculator include HRA and other exemptions?

No. Under the old regime it only counts your PF contribution under section 80C, which keeps the comparison simple. If you rent a home, pay health insurance premiums or have a home loan, use the tax regime calculator instead so those deductions are included.

How accurate is the professional tax figure?

Professional tax is levied by states, not the centre, so the amount varies. The calculator assumes ₹2,400 a year, which is the common maximum in states such as Maharashtra and Karnataka. Some states charge less and a few charge nothing, so check your payslip for the exact number.
